Laser Eye Surgery Suitability

Laser Eye Surgery Candidate Eligibility

Optilase is the most affordable laser eye surgery clinic in Perth and the southwest Peel Region in WA. Learn about laser eye surgery suitability requirements and if you may be considered an eligible candidate.

Who is a suitable candidate for laser eye surgery?

Many vision impairment issues are able to be solved with laser eye surgery or PRK surgery including astigmatism. However, there are various circumstances that may cause you to be unsuitable for this kind of treatment. At Optilase, we offer complimentary initial consultations to determine your suitability, however, if any of the following apply to you you may be considered a suitable candidate for laser eye surgery.

Between the ages of 23 and 60

Age has a great impact on the health and state of our eyes. Laser eye surgery is not suitable for individuals under the age of 23 because the eye has not reached maturity yet, and surgical results can’t be guaranteed. From the ages of 40 to 60, we provide a different procedure called monovision laser. Your vision gradually declines past the age of 40, therefore, standard laser eye surgery is not an ideal treatment.

Stable vision for the last 12 months

If your prescription has not changed and your eyesight has remained stable for 12 months, this indicates you may be a suitable candidate for laser eye surgery. Unfortunately, for those with rapidly declining eyesight, the results of laser eye surgery will likely disappoint. Eyesight needs to be relatively stable for laser eye surgery to be valuable.

Not pregnant or breastfeeding

During pregnancy, and often while breastfeeding, the body experiences many hormonal changes that may affect vision. For this reason, laser eye surgery would not be considered as the vision changes may be temporary. Preeclampsia and gestational diabetes can also affect eyesight and increase the risks associated with laser eye surgery.

Good overall eye health

Certain medical conditions can increase the risks of laser eye surgery and make you more prone to complications. Conditions such as Lupus, glaucoma, corneal disease, keratoconus, macular degeneration, or corneal ulcers will likely exclude you from the procedure. Speak to our Perth ophthalmologist, Dr Bill Ward, about your specific situation for more advice.

I’m still not sure if I’m a suitable laser eye surgery candidate

At Optilase, we understand that no two eyes are alike. Whether you fit or do not fit the factors mentioned above, you may still be suitable. We encourage all individuals to make an appointment for your complimentary suitability consultation and we will determine if you are eligible for Perth’s most affordable laser eye surgery.
